SK Telecom’s broadband subsidiary has upgraded its cutting-edge fiber broadband network to be capable of providing aggregate speeds of up to 52.5Gbps.
SK Broadband is adopting multi-dwelling units from HFR and next-generation PON technology from Nokia to allow it to aggregate different technologies on existing fiber.
These include TWDM-PON, with 40Gbps symmetrical, XGS-PON, with 10Gbps symmetrical and GPON with 2.5Gbps.
Using this technology, Nokia and SK Broadband provided the fastest end-user access speeds to date of 52.5Gbps to an initial set of apartment buildings in Seoul.
By adopting the latest generation of fiber technologies, SK Telecom plans to offer speeds of at least 10Gbps for all customers, further increasing South Korea’s lead as the world’s most advanced telecoms market.
“As a new era looms that demands Gigabit internet, ultra-high definition video and virtual and augmented reality services, SK Broadband will establish a network infrastructure that provides the best customer value,” SK Broadband head of networks Yoo Ji-chang said.
“Following the world’s first commercialization of an ADSL service and the two-pair LAN cable 500M service, we will establish a top-class optical Internet platform to create the best Gigabit broadband service environment for our customers.”
